The Federal Trade Commission ("FTC") has authority under the Federal Trade Commission Act to bring enforcement actions to stop "unfair and deceptive acts or practices." Through the filing, or the threat of filing, just 20 administrative and civil complaints, the FTC has used this power to establish minimum requirements for data privacy and security practices for the online world.
