The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) is a publicly available EPA database that contains information on toxic chemical releases and other waste management activities reported annually by certain covered industry groups as well as federal facilities. This inventory was established under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 (EPCRA) and expanded by the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990.
EPA released the 2005 TRI Data on March 22, 2007. This page provides an overview of the 2005 TRI data and relevant TRI information (including analysis, tables, charts, maps, etc).

For releases of hazardous substances, the federal government has established a Superfund Reportable Quantities (RQs). RQs trigger the reporting requirements under Superfund law. If a hazardous substance is released to the environment in an amount that equalsor exceeds its RQ, the release must be reported to federal authorities so that emergency response personnel can evaluate whether a response actionis needed. The RQ value is not the only factor used to determine whether federal notification requirements apply. There are reporting exemptions for hazardous substance releases.

The Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA) was enacted by Congress on October 17, 1986, as an outgrowth of concern over the protection of the public from chemical emergencies and dangers. Previously this had been covered by state and local regulatory authorities. After the catastrophic accidental release of methyl isocyanate at Union Carbide's Bhopal, India facility in December 1984, and a later toxic release from a West Virgina chemical plant it was evident that national public disclosure of emergency information was needed.
