O2.3 ENHANCE OVERSIGHT SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
Deliver and periodically update specialized training for the board – and ensure that the board is knowledgeable about the design and operation of the program.


Management should ensure board members have the appropriate skills to provide oversight and that they are knowledgeable about the program's operation and design.

Program oversight requires specific competencies, including basic understanding of legal requirements and specific details regarding the design and operation of the organization's program. Board members with oversight responsibilities for the program should receive specialized training to develop these skills.

  • Develop an orientation program for members of the board of directors.

  • Understand which committees or board members should be involved in oversight of compliance and ethics.

  • Train high-level personnel, substantial authority personnel, the organization's employees, and, as appropriate, the organization's agents, about their compliance and ethics management responsibilities and program objectives.

  • Ensure that the board has the necessary management, technical and subject matter expertise to perform appropriate oversight.
